Reliablility at its finest
12/18/14 8:09 PM

7,600 miles is not alot, but I am proud to say that I have had ZERO problems with my 2012 14R.

After reading about other new bike owners on other sites having various problems, its a good feeling to have not one problem outta my machine...........Not one trip to the dealership/repair shop.........Not only is the 14R the fastest production bike, its also very reliable and issue-free. Or at least mine is. (knock on wood)

Aside from the trivial front end bolts working themselves loose, are there any other reoccurring problems the 2012 and up bikes are known to suffer from?

Zero problems here either, but I'm only at 3,700 miles. Installing new tires this weekend already though. Turns out massive torque has a huge appetite for rubber..

None of my 14's ever had problems...none...zero.Hub says.."bulletproof"...he's totally right. It IS nice to be able to ride with confidence wherever and when ever.As for tires and torque...I installed PR4's just a few months ago...when it was still okay to ride...IDK exactly how many miles are on em right now...but over 3K...and they still look virtually new...course...I 'pretty much' stopped 'cruising' at 110 everywhere;)And layed off the real hard starts.Very good tires so far...probably the best brand I've tried.

The only hassle with my gen1 was the head cover gasket leak. That seems to be the only common gripe. The new gasket I installed seems to be sealed fine but I haven't been able to ride to test it thoroughly.

My Gen 1 has 66,000 on it and only had to replace 2 batteries. One for old age and one for being a cheap ass.

I was none too pleased to find my 1 & 2 TB boots loose and dislodged. Good thing I stuck to the book maintenance interval or I would've discovered the problem after many more miles. 11,000 was enough.

Mines got 4517 no issues. No doubt 14s, and all motorcycles pretty much made today are great quality. But there's always exceptions and the only thing that can be done is to maintain it with diligence. If a bike is one of these exceptions, as we hear time to time, it's usually pretty catastrophic.

Gotta check my front pads, think I may have used them up. I rode last weekend at my "track" and think I may have finished them off, the braking noise changed pretty drastically to a sliding sound. My tires are nearly spent as well, most people would probably replace them. I'm guessing 500-1000 miles max left.

Grn you run pretty hard I'm surprised you use ST tires. I'm been researching what I want to do but am having a tough time ith the sport vs. ST tire issue. I really like the M5s that came on it, but I wonder if there is something I'd like more.

"Just gotta throttle out and she'll live forever!!!"...LOL!!!Kinda like...when in doubt...gas it?;)

Some have had problems...I feel for you guys really.I've just been very fortunate all mine have had ONLY the gasket issue...(my 07)...but my 2012 and 2013...no leaking gaskets...my zx12 and zzr1200 didn't have any issues either. So that's pretty good I think.

Vic says.."Grn you run pretty hard I'm surprised you use ST tires"...they aren't all created equal for sure. The Angel GT's were supposed to be a longer wearing tire. They ended up NOT being that...no better really than a sport tire.Well...maybe a bit better...but not outstanding.Went through several actually...trying out different riding techniques...they all wore about the same length.Triple compound seems to be the best so far...but that's for another tire thread...not this one really. My Bad.

My 06 has 39 thousand miles and the engine pumps just fine no appreciable difference in how it runs or uses oil really doesn't use hardly any. It is getting very grubby and needs to have all the body work removed and a good cleaning and inspection. I have replaced a battery and fork seals and both rims because of running over stuff. Also replaced lots of tires and a few front brake pad sets and one rear set.

My '06 had a cracked frame, rusty gas tank, and valve cover oil leak, all in the 1st 2000 miles.

I'm glad to see this thread since I plan on putting so many miles on my 14 a long ways from home.

Several reports of engines blowing on 1441, I'm hoping that was down to poor ownership and/or busa trolls or whatever.

"Did you just stop reading there?"...well...no,I didn't.You said you're trying to figure out which type of tire you may want...and I offered my take on the ST tires I've used(as opposed to 'sport' tires)...did I miss something?I thought I covered things fairly clearly...????

All the 'sport' tires I've used have been fine actually...but they don't last long on the 14R.That's why I mentioned my experiences with the ST type of tires. If you intend to ride more aggressively, you won't get near the mileage out of a sport tire that you'd get from an ST."Sport Touring"...you want this on a 14R...you can get the same performance from the ST as you can from a sport only tire...IMO.It's really about buying tires. And how often you want to do that...

My '06 had a cracked frame, rusty gas tank, and valve cover oil leak, all in the 1st 2000 miles.

I'm going to assume:
So did they warranty both frame and tank?
Why yes they did. In fact, I've had zero problems since.

2015 - 2006 = 9 years of how many blown engines vs. all those years still in service w/out problems.

Cam cover gasket was updated and I do not hear about too many leaks after that update.

Grn I took your "my bad" as an apology for my, I guess expectations for your choice of tire. I find it completely unnecessary, and don't believe I said anything that warranted some kind of apology or whatever. Maybe you were talking about how you've tried a lot of tires and didn't get it right the first time. Hell if I know.

At any rate, from some of your ride stories I think we probably have some similar riding styles, pretty aggressive with some restraint yet occasional insanity. On my track I ride pretty hard with some very hard breaking for some very sharp turns. However, I wouldn't describe myself as riding at full race pace, except maybe in the braking department. I'm not really sure I need supersport tires or how much of a difference ST vs. SS would make in that situation.

I'm not really dissappointed with my Metz lasting ~5k miles (4500 at this point). I think that warm weekend I was pretty hard on them and wore off a good chunk of tread in 400 miles. Of course, if I could have a tire last 8k miles and not really make any difference handling wise..sure why not!?

Carabuser you more into straight line or cornering stuff?

"Maybe you were talking about how you've tried a lot of tires and didn't get it right the first time. Hell if I know"...LOL!!!Not sure IF it's possible to 'get it right' with tires and riding and wear.Guess those guys at Pirelli who got 11K out of their Angel GT's on the Concours 'got it right'...who knows?Somehow they ran the tire for 24 hrs...and did some calculating someway...to get that 11K numberLOL!!!That's what they said anyhow.I was lucky to pull 5K outta mine.;)

"my Bad" was referring to...going off topic when it really was a reliability thread...not a tire topicLOL!!!It was a 'general'..."My Bad"....now I'll say...'sorry'

Vic, into both cornering and straight, the PR4's handle the turns surprisingly well, I have
a 55 profile, so it turns in a little quicker than a 50 profile, I keep my pressure around
39lbs. some people have reported a little different ride if the pressure is different, but
they said it felt fine after they put 39lbs. in it ....

Had over 28k on mine in less than 2 years. Only problem was bolts on stering stem came loose. Pr4 best tires I have used. Got 8k out of stock metzler m5. Wasn't to happy with them. 2nd set was the pr3's. Worked great. Almost 15k on that set. 3rd set Pr4's. Actually felt and handled better than pr3's. 5k on those before accident.

Okay....once again...HOW are you guys doing these kinds of mileage numbers???I'm serious...I'm riding the speed limit during most of my rides...braking smoothly and timely...taking off sanely...how you doin this?

15K outta a rear tire?Sheesh...I barely reach 5K and they're almost at the wear bars....except now on these PR4's...so far...so good...look very 'unworn' at about 4K.
